Historic sites
Sopot, Pomeranian
The Grodzisko in Sopot (say "gro-JEES-ko", meaning "hillfort") is the oldest historic site in this Baltic spa town – the remains of an early medieval Slavic stronghold on a wooded hill about 400 m from the sea. Today it is an open-air archaeological museum run by the Archaeological Museum in Gdańsk, with reconstructed huts, a gate and a timber palisade, plus a modern exhibition pavilion. It is a great change of pace from the beach and the Monciak promenade, especially with kids.
Long before Sopot became a fashionable resort, Slavic Pomeranians built a fortified settlement here. It was in use from the 8th to the first half of the 10th century. The hill – locally nicknamed Castle Hill or "the Frying Pan" – is ringed by a rampart and moat, and two streams flow in deep ravines on either side, giving the inhabitants natural protection. The first excavations were carried out in 1885 by the German scholar Hugo Conwentz; records from a 1934 dig were lost in World War II. Archaeologists from the museum in Gdańsk excavated the site in 1961–1966 and again from 1995.
In season the museum hosts archaeology festivals, craft demonstrations, combat shows and archery. On October 24, 2026, the site opens at noon only, for a staged re-enactment of the Slavic "Dziady" rite for the dead. Allow 45–60 minutes.
