Sopot, Pomeranian
Sopot Beach is the wide, sandy shoreline that runs the full length of Sopot, the spa town between Gdańsk and Gdynia on Poland's Baltic coast. With the famous wooden pier, the historic Grand Hotel and timber bathhouses as a backdrop, it is one of the best-known beaches in Poland – lively and lifeguarded in summer, quiet and atmospheric for long walks the rest of the year. It is only about a 15-minute walk from Sopot train station.
According to MOSiR, the city's sports and recreation office, Sopot's beaches stretch for almost 4.5 km (2.8 miles) and cover around 26 hectares; at the widest point the sand runs nearly 100 m from the dunes to the water. Beach entrances are numbered, which makes it easy to find a swimming area or meet friends. Sea bathing here goes back to June 11, 1823, when Jean Georg Haffner opened the first bathhouse and turned a fishing village into a resort. Between the wars Sopot – then Zoppot – was a glamorous playground of the Free City of Danzig.
In summer Sopot runs seven lifeguarded swimming areas, each 100 m long. Under the city council resolution for 2026:
Lifeguards worked from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (longer at Łazienki Południowe I). Swimming is banned within 100 m of the pier on either side, and a red flag means no swimming at all. The water rescue number is 601 100 100.
Yes, if you like empty beaches. From October to April the sand is quiet and photogenic, with views of the Orłowo cliff in Gdynia and the lights of Gdańsk across the bay. Locals walk, run and – in winter – go cold-water swimming. There are no lifeguards out of season, so any dip is at your own risk. A seaside promenade and bike path run along the shore toward Gdańsk-Jelitkowo and Gdynia-Orłowo.
As of October 2026:
Plaża dostępna całą dobę przez cały rok; kąpieliska strzeżone tylko latem (2026: 13.06–13.09 Łazienki Południowe I, pozostałe 27.06–30.08).
