St Bridget's Basilica in Gdańsk is a Gothic church in the Old Town known as the "church of Solidarity". In the 1980s it was one of the key centers of anti-communist opposition in Poland, and today it also draws visitors with its monumental Amber Altar of the Homeland, one of the largest amber works in the world. It stands on Profesorska Street next to St Catherine's Church and a few minutes from the Amber Museum, so all three fit easily into one walk.
A convent of Bridgettine nuns was founded here in 1396, and the church was built in 1394–1402, then rebuilt with three aisles in 1514. After a fire in 1587 and disputes with the Lutheran city council, the Jesuits took over pastoral care, and a parish was created in 1660. Under Napoleon (1807) the convent became barracks and the church an arms factory. The convent was dissolved in 1817 and its buildings demolished in the mid-19th century.
In 1945 the church was badly damaged, leaving only walls and parts of the vaults. The ruins were handed to the Catholic diocese in 1970, and Father Henryk Jankowski, later chaplain to the shipyard workers, began clearing the rubble. The rebuilt church was rededicated on October 8, 1983.
During the August 1980 strikes at the Gdańsk Shipyard, the church ministered to the strikers. After martial law was declared on December 13, 1981, it became a hub of support for the banned Solidarity trade union. Lech Wałęsa, Tadeusz Mazowiecki, Jacek Kuroń, Bronisław Geremek and Father Jerzy Popiełuszko were among those who found help here. Pope John Paul II granted it the title of minor basilica in 1991.
It is a working church, so visit outside Mass. Allow 20–40 minutes. Check tourist hours before your visit; in practice it is usually open during the day. A voluntary donation may be requested at the altar. If you are interested in the fall of communism in Central Europe – or simply want to see what amber can do on a monumental scale – it is absolutely worth it. Combine it with the European Solidarity Centre for the full story.
