St Catherine's Church in Gdańsk is the oldest parish church of the city's Old Town: a Gothic brick building with a Baroque spire, standing opposite the Great Mill. The great 17th-century astronomer Johannes Hevelius is commemorated here, and its tower holds one of the largest carillons in Central Europe. It makes an easy stop between the railway station and the Main Town, and pairs perfectly with the Amber Museum next door.
The church was built by the dukes of Pomerania in 1227–1239 and greatly enlarged after 1379. From 1555 to 1945 it was a Protestant church, reflecting the Lutheran majority of what was then largely German-speaking Danzig. The tower is about 76 m tall; its Baroque spire was designed by Jacob van den Block in 1634.
Fire has struck repeatedly. Lightning set the tower ablaze in 1905; in 1945, during the battle for the city, the roofs, spire and high altar burned and parts of the vaults collapsed. Rebuilding took decades – the spire was restored in 1974–1979 and the vaults in 1980–1982. On May 22, 2006, another fire destroyed the roof, but the interior and tower survived and most movable artworks were evacuated. Today the church is cared for by Carmelite friars.
The tower houses the Gdańsk Museum of Science, a Museum of Gdańsk branch with an exhibition and viewpoint. It is seasonal – open April to September and closed in winter. The climb involves hundreds of steps on narrow, winding Gothic stairs, so it is not suitable for visitors with limited mobility. Tickets: 26 PLN regular, 19 PLN reduced, 70 PLN family.
This is a working church, so visit outside services and keep quiet. Allow 20–30 minutes for the interior; add an hour in season if you climb the tower. Check visiting hours for tourists before you go, or simply drop by during the day. Entry to the church is free. If you are interested in Gdańsk's Hanseatic and scientific history – or you are visiting the Amber Museum anyway – it is well worth a look.
