Gradowa Hill in Gdańsk

Gradowa Hill in Gdańsk (pronounced roughly "grah-DOH-vah") is a 46-meter (151 ft) hill right behind Gdańsk's main train station, and one of the best free viewpoints over the historic Main Town. Its slopes hide a 19th-century brick fortress, its summit carries the giant Millennium Cross, and the old barracks now host Hevelianum, a hands-on science center. If you have just arrived by train, this is the easiest place to get your bearings before you walk into the Old Town.

Where it is

Gdańsk sits on Poland's Baltic coast, in the Pomerania region. Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport is about 30 minutes by train or taxi from the center, and fast trains connect the city with Warsaw in around three hours. The hill rises directly west of Gdańsk Główny station: you can see the cross from the platforms.

A short history

For three centuries the hill, known in German as Hagelsberg, was the key to the city's defense – whoever held it could fire down into the streets. Work on the bastions began in 1655, during the wars between Poland and Sweden, to plans by the local architect Jan Strakowski. Napoleon's army refortified it in the early 1800s, and the Prussians rebuilt it as a modern fort between 1867 and 1874, with caponiers, underground passages and artillery positions. The fort remained a military site until 1945, when it was one of the last German defensive points during the battle for the city.

The red steel Millennium Cross, more than 16 m (52 ft) tall and designed by sculptor Jacek Łuczak, was unveiled on September 3, 2000, on the spot where an anti-aircraft gun once stood.

Things to do on Gradowa Hill

• Take in the view. From the cross you look east over St. Mary's Church, the Main Town Hall spire and St. Catherine's Church, and north to the shipyard cranes – the shipyard where the Solidarity movement was born in 1980.
• Walk the fortress. The Jerusalem Bastion is the highest and best-preserved part of the complex; brick barracks, gates and tunnel entrances line the paths.
• Visit Hevelianum. Named after the 17th-century Gdańsk astronomer Johannes Hevelius, the center has interactive science exhibits and displays on the fort's history. It is a strong rainy-day option for families.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially if your time in Gdańsk is short. The walk up and the viewpoint take about an hour and cost nothing, and the panorama explains the layout of the city better than any map. Add two to three hours if you want to see the Hevelianum exhibits. Afternoon light is best for photos, since the sun is behind you as you look over the Old Town. Paths are partly steep and cobbled; Hevelianum has elevators in some buildings and accessible restrooms, but the historic structures limit access in places.

• Hevelianum opening hours: Tuesday–Friday 8 a.m.–4 p.m., Saturday–Sunday 10 a.m.–6 p.m., closed Mondays.
• Tickets: the hill itself is free; Hevelianum exhibits are paid (prices in Polish złoty, PLN), with online sales on the center's website.
• On foot: stairs start next to the bus station beside Gdańsk Główny; the climb takes roughly 10–15 minutes.
• Public transport: stops "Dworzec PKP", "Dworzec PKS", "Hevelianum" and "Brama Oliwska"; there is also a MEVO city-bike station on the hill.
• Parking: lower lot (Gradowa 3, 7 a.m.–8 p.m.) and upper lot (24/7) at 5.40 PLN per hour; another lot on 3 Maja 9 at 6.60 PLN per hour.

Nearby

From the hill it is a short walk downhill to the Upland Gate and the Royal Route through Long Street and Long Market, the heart of Gdańsk's Main Town. The Amber Museum in the Prison Tower and St. Catherine's Church are also close.
