Krynica-Zdrój, Lesser Poland
The Nikifor Museum in Krynica-Zdrój (KRIH-nee-tsah ZDROOY) is a small but remarkable museum dedicated to Nikifor Krynicki, a self-taught painter from the Lemko minority who became one of Europe's best-known naive artists. It occupies the pale-blue wooden Romanówka villa on the Dietl Boulevards, a short walk from the spa's main pump room. Expect dozens of original works, the artist's humble tools and a moving story of 20th-century Poland.
Nikifor, born Epifaniusz Drowniak in Krynica on May 21, 1895, was the son of a poor, deaf and mute Lemko woman. The Lemkos are an Eastern Slavic highland people of the Carpathians. For most of his life he lived in poverty and was regarded as mentally disabled, painting on cardboard, notebook covers and scraps of paper. He left nearly 40,000 works. Polish and Ukrainian painters in Paris saw his work as early as 1930; his first Warsaw exhibition followed in 1949 and a Paris gallery show in 1958. In 1947, during Operation Vistula, when the communist authorities forcibly resettled Lemkos and Ukrainians, he was deported to western Poland. He walked back to Krynica twice and was allowed to stay after his third return. He died on October 10, 1968, and is buried in Krynica's Old Cemetery. His life inspired the film "My Nikifor" (2004), with actress Krystyna Feldman in the title role.
The museum is a branch of the Nowy Sącz regional museum (Muzeum Ziemi Sądeckiej), which holds the world's largest Nikifor collection. The 19th-century Swiss-style villa originally stood elsewhere in town; it was dismantled in 1990, restored and rebuilt on this site, and the museum opened in 1995.
