Krynica-Zdrój lies in the Sącz Beskids, in the Kryniczanka valley within the Poprad Landscape Park, and is one of Poland's best-known spa towns. Since the 19th century visitors have come here for mineral water cures, and its former glory shows in wooden villas and the promenade. Start on the promenade, where you can taste the local waters in the Main Pump Room, then ride the funicular up Parkowa Hill, in service since 1937. A gondola takes you up Jaworzyna Krynicka, in winter one of Poland's major ski areas. The Romanówka villa houses the Nikifor Museum, devoted to the world-famous Lemko naive painter. By bike or car, head to the Orthodox church in Polany. Two to three days suit a short stay, longer for a spa cure. Come by train or car from Nowy Sącz. Summer and winter are the best seasons.
