Stary Sącz lies in the Sącz Basin where the Dunajec and Poprad rivers meet, and is one of the oldest towns in Poland. Its history is tied to St Kinga, who founded a Poor Clares convent here in the 13th century, still home to the nuns today. Start on the cobbled Market Square lined with single-storey houses, then walk to the convent and the Regional Museum. The Papal Altar stands on the meadows where John Paul II canonised St Kinga in 1999. For a walk, try the Forest Pier and the viewing platform at Wola Krogulecka, which looks out over the Beskid ranges, and in town see the Székely Gate and St Kinga's chapel. Stary Sącz is a good stop on the cycle route along the Poprad and Dunajec. One day is enough. Come by train or bus from Nowy Sącz, a few kilometres away. May to September is best.
