Papal Altar in Stary Sącz

The Papal Altar in Stary Sącz (STAH-ri sonch) is a two-story wooden structure on the town's riverside meadows in southern Poland, where Pope John Paul II canonized St. Kinga on June 16, 1999. Built as a temporary stage for the Mass, it was never taken down and is the only papal altar in Poland preserved where the pope celebrated. Today it anchors a pilgrimage center and museum, draws close to 200,000 visitors a year and frames a broad view of the Beskid Sądecki mountains.

Background

St. Kinga, a 13th-century Hungarian princess who married a Polish duke, founded the Poor Clares convent in Stary Sącz in 1280 and is venerated as the patron saint of salt miners. Her canonization Mass drew an estimated 600,000 people. The plan was to dismantle the altar afterward, keeping only a small shrine, but public interest led the local authorities and the bishop to preserve it; between 1999 and 2003 it was structurally reinforced without changing its look.

What to see

• The altar itself, designed by Zakopane architect Zenon Andrzej Remi with his son Bartosz, with a raised center and a roof topped by small turrets. A copy of St. Kinga's canonization portrait by Józefa Kamińska hangs above the altar table.
• The altar table, which originally rested on two blocks of rock salt from the Bochnia Salt Mine; weather damaged them, so they were moved to St. Kinga's Chapel in the mine and replaced with granite.
• A wayside shrine with the Sorrowful Christ, carved by Michał Gąsienica Szostak.
• The John Paul II Memorial Room and Museum below: papal thrones, the vestment worn at the 1999 Mass, salt candlesticks, the pope's skis and hiking gear, and the skullcap he signed on the day his pontificate began, October 22, 1978.

Visiting tips

Allow 30 minutes for the altar and grounds, or about an hour with the museum. On a clear day the meadows offer a wide view of the mountains. The site is flat and spacious, with a playground, a sports field and bike and kayak rental next to the center. During church celebrations access to parts of the site may be limited.
