Regional Museum in Stary Sącz

The Regional Museum in Stary Sącz (say "STAH-ri sonch"), named after ethnographer Seweryn Udziela, fills a historic low-roofed house on the market square of this small town in southern Poland, about 100 km (60 miles) southeast of Kraków. It is the quickest way to understand the place: one building covers St. Kinga and the 1999 papal visit, old crafts, archaeological finds, a world-famous soprano and one of Poland's best-known philosopher-priests.

A museum built by locals

The collection began with a shoemaker, Józef Paszkiewicz, who gathered relics of the town's craft guilds and its gymnastics society. In 1956 his objects went on display in two rooms of the restored "Dom na Dołkach" (roughly "the house in the hollow"), and in 1976 the museum took its present name after Seweryn Udziela (1857–1937), a Stary Sącz native who founded the Ethnographic Museum in Kraków. It is still run by a volunteer society, the Friends of Stary Sącz. A room on Father Józef Tischner opened in 2004, the building was renovated in 2012, and in 2023 the vaulted cellar became an archaeology gallery.

What to see

• Ada Sari, career and fame (ground floor, rooms 1–2): Jadwiga Szayer, known on stage as Ada Sari (1886–1968), grew up in Stary Sącz and went on to sing at La Scala in Milan. Her Viennese dressing mirror from 1905, records, letters and a re-created salon are on show, and you can listen to her recordings.
• History and culture of Stary Sącz (rooms 3–7): a model of the papal altar and the pen John Paul II used to sign his autograph in 1999, mementos of King John III Sobieski's stop here in 1683 on the way back from the Battle of Vienna, a model of the town hall that burned in 1795, potter's and shoemaker's workshops, a shoemakers' guild book from 1678, a clavichord from 1760, and folk and religious art of the local Lachy Sądeckie people.
• Treasures from the earth (cellar): a polished stone axe from around 1700 BC, 13th-century swords recovered from the Dunajec River and coins from the reign of King Władysław Jagiełło.
• Father Józef Tischner, life and thought (first floor): the philosopher-priest and author of "The Ethics of Solidarity" was born here in 1931. His study from his parents' home has been rebuilt with the original desk, bookcase and typewriter.

Visiting tips

Plan an hour to 90 minutes. Labels are mainly in Polish, but the museum website has a page of general information in English (and in Hungarian). Individual visitors can book a guide for PLN 100; groups of up to 25 should book at least three days ahead. Kids usually enjoy the swords in the cellar and the craft workshops.

• May, June, September: Tuesday–Saturday 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., Sunday 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.
• July–August: Tuesday–Saturday 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., Sunday 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
• Closed Mondays and public holidays (except May 1, May 3 and August 15 when not on a Monday).

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you are already in Stary Sącz: it is small, affordable and gives context to everything else in town. Note the short winter hours, which make a morning visit essential from October to April.

Getting there and nearby

The museum is at Rynek 6 on the main square. Stary Sącz is about 8 km (5 miles) south of Nowy Sącz, with a railway station; from Kraków, allow just under two hours by car. Within walking distance are the Poor Clares Monastery founded by St. Kinga and Leśne Molo, a free treetop walkway on Miejska Góra hill.
