Galician Town in Nowy Sącz (Miasteczko Galicyjskie)

On the outskirts of Nowy Sącz, on Lwowska Street, a reconstructed Galician small town of more than a century ago has been brought back to life: a market square with a town hall, a stylish café and an inn serving regional dishes. The open-air museum forms part of the Sącz Ethnographic Park, and there is no other attraction of this kind in Poland.

The skansen and four ethnographic groups

The Sącz Ethnographic Park covers about 20 hectares and holds 68 buildings: nine multi-building peasant farmsteads, a 17th-century manor house, a manor farm, an 18th-century Lemko tserkva and a fragment of a settlement of the Carpathian Roma. Interior exhibitions fill 58 rooms, and by the stream stand a water-driven sawmill, mill and fulling mill. The park presents the four ethnographic groups of the Sącz region: the Lachy Sądeckie, Pogórzanie, Sącz Highlanders and the Lemko of the Poprad valley.

A market square as it was a hundred years ago

The heart of the town is the market square with the town hall, which houses the Imperial and Royal Galician Café with guest rooms; opposite stands the Inn with regional cuisine. The townhouses contain reconstructions including a dentist's office and a photography studio. Entry to the town grounds is free, tickets cover the interiors, and on Wednesdays admission is free. In the season (1 May–15 October) the site is open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–18:00, off season Wednesday to Sunday 9:00–16:00; a normal ticket costs PLN 16, a concession ticket PLN 12.

There is a free car park on site, and for children there are mini-guides with facts and puzzles suited to preschool and early school age.
