Church of the Holy Spirit in Nowy Sącz

The Church of the Holy Spirit in Nowy Sącz is a former Norbertine church now run by the Jesuits. Its oldest sections are Gothic, while later rebuilding added Baroque elements, a 17th-century nave and a tower from 1755. The church stands on Piotr Skarga Street near the market square, making it easy to include in a walk through central Nowy Sącz.

Gothic structure and later additions

The presbytery retains a distinctive net vault supported by buttresses. Notice the proportions of the Gothic section, its contrast with the later nave and the 18th-century marble portal. The building shows how a medieval church was adapted to the changing needs of its community.

The Our Lady of Consolation image

The most important devotional object is the 1569 image of Our Lady of Consolation, painted in tempera on a lime-wood panel. The church also holds an image of St Anne with the Virgin and Child. These are not simply interior decoration: the image remains an important place of prayer, so visitors should remember the church’s sacred function.

Practical information

Combine the church with the market square, town hall and other Old Town sights. It is an active church, so quiet sightseeing may depend on Masses, services and ceremonies. Check the Jesuit community’s current schedule before travelling. Allow about 30–60 minutes for the interior and a short walk nearby.
