National Museum in Wrocław

The National Museum in Wrocław at 5 Powstańców Warszawy Square has a particularly strong Lower Silesian identity. The institution’s collections contain more than 200,000 objects, while the main building is especially important for its medieval and early modern Silesian art, Polish and European painting and decorative arts.

The permanent galleries range from Silesian stone sculpture of the 12th–16th centuries through later Silesian art to Polish and European painting. Works on display include pieces by Michael Willmann, Jacek Malczewski, Stanisław Wyspiański and Wassily Kandinsky. The collection also has an interesting post-war history: part of it came from former German museums, while some works arrived in Wrocław in 1946 from galleries in Lviv.

Do not try to give every section equal attention during one visit. It is better to choose one or two galleries and return for the others another time. Admission to the permanent exhibitions is free on Saturdays. Before visiting, check current notices, as individual galleries can occasionally close temporarily for conservation work or exhibition changes.
