National Museum in Wrocław

The National Museum in Wrocław is one of Poland's major art museums and the best place to explore the art of Silesia, from medieval stone carving to 19th-century painting. It occupies a grand, vine-covered building on the Oder River, a 15-minute walk from the Market Square, and the institution's collections number more than 200,000 objects. The building and its story

The red-brick palace was built in 1883–1886 to designs by Karl Friedrich Endell, in Northern Renaissance Revival style, as the seat of the Silesian provincial government — Wrocław was then the Prussian city of Breslau. Bronze statues of Albrecht Dürer and Michelangelo by Robert Haertl guard the entrance. The façade is covered with a climbing creeper, green in summer and flaming red in fall.

After World War II the city became Polish, and the building was adapted as a museum in 1946–1947. It opened to visitors in July 1948 and was raised to national museum status in 1970. The city's museum tradition goes back much further, to a royal museum of art and antiquities founded in 1815 and the Silesian Museum of Fine Arts of 1880. Its collections reflect the region's turbulent past: many prewar German collections were lost or scattered, part of today's holdings came from former German museums, and some works arrived in 1946 from galleries in Lviv, a city Poland lost to the Soviet Union.

What to see

The main building has six permanent galleries:

• Silesian stone sculpture, 12th–16th centuries — including a 12th-century Romanesque tympanum from Ołbin and the tomb of Duke Henry IV Probus, a masterpiece of Gothic sculpture.
• Silesian art, 14th–16th centuries — marked as temporarily closed as of October 2026.
• Silesian art, 16th–19th centuries — with paintings by Michael Willmann, often called the "Silesian Rembrandt."
• Polish art, 17th–19th centuries — featuring Jan Matejko's The Vows of King John Casimir.
• European art, 15th–20th centuries — including Bernardo Bellotto's Entry of Jerzy Ossoliński into Rome in 1633.
• Cudo–Twórcy, a gallery on the third floor.

Look out for a Gothic Pietà from around 1400 and the skylit arcaded courtyard filled with sculpture. Outside, facing the river, stands Magdalena Abakanowicz's installation Knights of King Arthur, and on the southwest corner you'll find Christian Behrens's sculpture Allegory of Fishing.

The museum also runs three branches: the Racławice Panorama (a giant 19th-century painting of a 1794 battle), the Ethnographic Museum and the Four Domes Pavilion, home to contemporary art.

How long to spend and tips

Allow 2 hours for the highlights and half a day for everything. Choose one or two galleries rather than rushing through all of them. Guided tours must be booked by phone. The museum publishes accessibility information, including audio description and content in Polish Sign Language; English-language support beyond that is not confirmed on the official site, so a translation app can help with labels.

Opening hours and tickets

As of October 2026 (winter schedule, October 1–March 31):

• Tue–Fri 10 a.m.–4 p.m., Sat–Sun 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; closed Mondays.
• Summer (from April 1): Tue–Fri 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Sat–Sun 10:30 a.m.–6 p.m.
• The ticket desk closes 30 minutes before the museum.

Permanent galleries:

• 20 PLN standard, 15 PLN reduced, family ticket 10 PLN per person; children under 7 free.

How to get there

The museum is at plac Powstańców Warszawy 5, about 0.6 miles (1 km) east of the Market Square. Trams and buses stop nearby. Parking in the center is paid and tight, so walking is easiest. Wrocław Airport (WRO) is about 6 miles (10 km) west of downtown; from Kraków the train takes roughly 3 hours.

Is it worth visiting?

Absolutely — especially combined with the Racławice Panorama, a few steps away. Afterwards, stroll along the Oder embankment to Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island).
