Piasek Island in Wrocław (say "PYAH-sek," meaning "sand") is a small island in the Oder River between the Old Town and Cathedral Island, and it lies on the city's most scenic walking route. It's dominated by the Gothic Church of the Virgin Mary on the Sand, with a former monastery, an Orthodox church, a historic mill and riverside lawns around it. If you're walking from the Market Square to the cathedral, this is where the city suddenly turns green and quiet.
The island takes its name from the church's Latin dedication, Sancta Maria in Arena ("Mary on the Sand"). In the early Middle Ages a key north–south route crossed the island. A Romanesque church, probably founded by the nobleman Piotr Włostowic and his family, was finished before 1148, and Augustinian canons settled beside it.
For centuries the entire island belonged to the Church – until Prussia dissolved the monasteries in 1810 and the city took over. In the final months of World War II much of the island was destroyed; the church and monastery were badly hit during fighting over Easter 1945.
The island itself is free and open at all times. Allow 30–45 minutes, or about an hour with the church. Better still, combine it with Cathedral Island and Słodowa Island in a 2–3 hour walk. Church and nativity-scene opening times depend on the parish schedule, so check locally; avoid visiting during Mass. Expect lines at the nativity scene around Christmas.
It's a 10–15 minute walk from the Market Square: head past the Market Hall (Hala Targowa, nearest tram stop) and cross the red Sand Bridge (Most Piaskowy). The island is also linked to Cathedral Island by Tumski Bridge and to Słodowa Island by a footbridge. Wrocław Airport is about 10 km west; taxis and buses run to the center.
Cross Tumski Bridge for the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and its viewing tower. Słodowa Island next door is a favorite summer hangout, and the Market Hall and the University of Wrocław's Baroque main building are just across the river.
