Wrocław Archcathedral

The Archcathedral of St John the Baptist in Wrocław is one of the key landmarks of Cathedral Island and one of the city’s most distinctive Gothic buildings. The present church was built in the 13th and 14th centuries on the site of earlier churches. Its two towers are 98 metres high, and the viewing terrace looks over the Oder, Cathedral Island and Wrocław.

History and architecture

The cathedral is a three-aisled basilica with a transept and presbytery. Its story includes medieval rebuilding, Baroque chapels and severe damage in 1945, followed by decades of work restoring its Gothic form. Inside, look for the vaults, St Elizabeth’s Chapel, the Electoral Chapel of Corpus Christi and the 1591 silver altar of St John the Baptist.

Terrace and ticketed areas

Entry to the cathedral itself is free. Tickets apply to the viewing terrace, Baroque chapels with the presbytery and selected exhibitions. Terrace access depends on the weather, while prices and hours can change. Check the cathedral website for current details and temporary closures.

Planning your visit

Sightseeing is not allowed during Masses, services or concerts. Dress appropriately and keep quiet. Combine the cathedral with Cathedral Island, Piasek Island, the Oder boulevards and the Botanical Garden. Allow around 1–1.5 hours for the church and terrace.
