Grunwald Bridge

Grunwald Bridge is one of the most recognisable features of Wrocław’s cityscape and an interesting monument of engineering in its own right. It was built between 1908 and 1910 to connect the city centre with the expanding eastern districts. The official opening took place on 10 October 1910.

What makes the bridge particularly interesting is not its size but its construction. It is a steel suspension bridge supported by massive masonry pylons. Wrocław’s municipal materials note that it is the only suspension bridge in the world whose main load-bearing bands are made from flat-laid steel plates. The design was selected after a competition launched in 1904, and construction was carried out by the Beuchelt company from Zielona Góra. The bridge was damaged during the Second World War and rebuilt afterwards.

Do not limit yourself to simply crossing the bridge on foot. Good views of its silhouette and pylons can be found from the Oder riverbanks and nearby bridges. It remains a busy city artery used by trams and cars, so take photographs only from pavements and designated areas. A visit combines easily with Słowacki Park, the National Museum and the Panorama of the Battle of Racławice.
