The University of Wrocław Botanical Garden is one of the most peaceful things to do in Wrocław (say "VROTS-wahf"), Poland's third-largest city and the capital of Lower Silesia. Tucked behind the cathedral on Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island), it was founded in 1811 and is the second-oldest botanical garden in Poland, after Kraków's. About 7,500 plant species grow on roughly 18 acres (7.5 ha), just a 25-minute walk from the Market Square.
The garden was laid out on land freed up when Wrocław's fortifications were demolished, partly over a filled-in arm of the Oder River. The pond at its heart is a remnant of that old channel. Back then the city was the Prussian Breslau, and the garden grew quickly: by 1843 it held around 10,000 species and varieties.
The Second World War hit it hard. During the 1945 siege of "Festung Breslau," the entire greenhouse collection was destroyed and about half the trees were lost. Polish botanists rebuilt the garden after the war, and it reopened to the public in 1950. Today it is a protected monument and part of the historic city center, which Poland lists as a national Monument of History.
Spring brings magnolias and tulips; October brings fall color.
Yes, if you want a break from churches and museums. Plan 1.5–2 hours. Paths are short and flat, so it works well with kids, and children under 3 get in free. Signage is mostly in Polish and Latin plant names, so a plant app helps.
As of October 2026:
The main entrance is at ul. Sienkiewicza 23, next to the Natural History Museum; a second gate opens from ul. Kanonia near the cathedral. From the Market Square, walk about 1.2 miles (2 km) across Tumski Bridge, or take a tram to the "Ogród Botaniczny" stop. Wrocław Airport (WRO) is about 6 miles (10 km) west of the center. By train, Wrocław is roughly 3 hours from Kraków and 3.5–4 hours from Warsaw. Parking nearby is limited, so public transport is easier.
Combine your visit with Ostrów Tumski: the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and the Church of the Holy Cross are a few minutes away.
