Wrocław Market Hall (Hala Targowa, say "HAH-lah tar-GOH-vah") is a working food market that has been trading since 1908 – and a landmark of early concrete engineering. Behind its red-brick facade, giant reinforced-concrete arches soar over stalls piled with vegetables, fruit, cheese, cured meats and flowers. It's free to enter, just a few minutes from the Market Square, and one of the best places in town to see everyday Wrocław life.
In the late 19th century, the city of Breslau (Wrocław's German name until 1945) planned four covered market halls to move trading off its squares. Only two were built, both designed by Richard Plüddemann and Heinrich Küster. This one went up in 1906–1908 on the site of a demolished arsenal and opened on October 5, 1908. Its twin on Kolejowa Street was badly damaged in 1945 and demolished in 1973.
The hall on Piaskowa Street survived the war with only minor roof damage and was trading again by 1947–1948. It was thoroughly renovated in 1980–1983 and is a protected historic monument.
The official website lists the hall as open Monday–Saturday, 8 am–6:30 pm, and closed on Sundays; individual stalls may keep different hours. Entry is free. Prices are in Polish złoty (PLN); having some small change is handy at market stalls. Note that the current operator's contract ends on December 31, 2026, and the city is selecting a new one, so hours may change in 2027.
In January 2026 the city presented traders with a plan: a building survey, a development study and a competition to choose a new operator. Trading will remain the main use – local zoning caps food outlets and services at 20% of the retail floor space.
Yes, especially if you like markets, architecture or cheap local food. Allow 30–45 minutes, or about an hour with a meal. Saturday mornings are busiest and most atmospheric; weekday afternoons are calmer. Signage is mostly in Polish, but pointing and smiling works fine.
The hall is at Piaskowa 17, about a 10-minute walk from the Market Square. The Hala Targowa tram stop is right outside. Wrocław Airport is about 10 km west of the center. Parking nearby is in a paid zone and limited.
Cross the Sand Bridge to Piasek Island and the Church of the Virgin Mary on the Sand, then continue over Tumski Bridge to Cathedral Island. The University of Wrocław's Baroque main building is a few minutes west, and the Museum of Architecture is a short walk south.
