Tumski Bridge in Wrocław (say "TOOM-skee") is the green steel bridge that carries you across the Oder River onto Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island), the oldest part of the city. Known locally as the Lovers' Bridge, it frames the twin spires of the cathedral and is lined with gas lamps still lit by hand every evening. It's one of the most photographed spots in Wrocław and the classic gateway to the cathedral quarter.
There has been a crossing here since at least the 12th century. For centuries the bridge marked a boundary: on one side the city council ruled, on the other the bishop's church authorities. A medieval crossing even collapsed in 1423 during a Palm Sunday procession.
Today's bridge dates from 1889, when it replaced a wooden predecessor. It's a two-span riveted steel truss modeled on a prize-winning design from Mannheim, Germany. Until 1945 it was called the Dombrücke (Cathedral Bridge). It was damaged during the 1945 siege of Breslau, and you can still spot shrapnel marks. A full restoration ran from 2019 to February 2020.
Cathedral Island was the heart of early medieval Wrocław and has been the seat of a bishop since the year 1000. Crossing the bridge still feels like stepping into a different town: cobbled lanes, Gothic churches, clergy houses and far fewer cars. It's a short walk, but easily one of the most atmospheric in the city, especially after dark.
The bridge is free and open around the clock. You'll cross it in a minute, but plan 1–2 hours for Cathedral Island as a whole. Come at dusk to watch the lamps come on and the cathedral spires light up, or early in the morning if you want photos without crowds. The deck is flat, so it's fine for strollers and wheelchairs; car traffic is restricted.
The bridge is about a 15–20 minute walk from the Market Square, passing the Market Hall (Hala Targowa), where the nearest tram stop is. Wrocław's airport is roughly 10 km west of the center, and the main train station is about 35 minutes away on foot or a short tram ride.
Cross the bridge and you're on Katedralna Street, which leads to the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist with its viewing tower. Behind you on Piasek Island stands the Gothic Church of the Virgin Mary on the Sand, and nearby Słodowa Island is a favorite riverside hangout in summer.
