Ostrów Tumski in Wrocław (Cathedral Island, pronounced roughly OS-troof TOOM-skee, VROTS-wahv) is the oldest part of the city: a former island in the Oder River where the Piast dynasty built a stronghold in the 10th century and where a bishopric was founded around the year 1000. Today it is a quiet quarter of churches, canons' houses and cobbled lanes, crowned by the twin spires of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Every evening a lamplighter in a cape lights its gas lamps by hand, which makes it one of the most atmospheric things to do in Wrocław.
Wrocław is the capital of Lower Silesia in southwestern Poland, roughly 3.5 hours from Berlin and 2.5–3 hours from Kraków by train. Ostrów Tumski lies about 1.5 km northeast of the Market Square, an easy 20-minute walk across Sand Island (Wyspa Piasek).
The Piasts built the first wooden structures and ramparts here in the 10th century. At the Congress of Gniezno in 1000, a bishopric was created in Wrocław, and the island has been the city's religious heart ever since. In 1315 it passed to the Church and became a place of sanctuary. Nicolaus Copernicus was a canon of the Holy Cross collegiate chapter here from 1503 to 1538.
The island stopped being a true island in the 19th century, when a branch of the Oder was filled in. During the siege of Festung Breslau in 1945, the area was badly damaged and about 70% of the cathedral was destroyed. The cathedral was rebuilt by 1951, but its conical spires returned only on August 14, 1991; each is about 37 m tall and weighs 17 tonnes. Since 1994 the island has been part of the Historic Monument of Poland covering Wrocław's historic center.
Every day at dusk, a man in a black cape and top hat walks the island lighting nearly a hundred gas lamps, then puts them out just after sunrise. His route is about 3.5 km and takes just over an hour. It is one of the few places in Europe where the tradition survives, so plan to be near Tumski Bridge shortly before dark.
Absolutely. Allow 1.5–2 hours for a walk, the cathedral and the tower; add the Botanical Garden and you have half a day. Go in the late afternoon: cathedral and tower in daylight, then the riverbanks and the lamplighter at dusk. This is a living church district, so tours of the cathedral pause during services, and modest dress is expected. Cobbles can be uneven, but most streets are stroller- and wheelchair-friendly, and the tower has an elevator.
As of October 2026:
Walk from the Market Square in about 20 minutes via Nowy Targ and the Sand Bridge. Car access on the island is restricted and parking is scarce, so leave your car in the downtown paid parking zone.
Next door is the University of Wrocław Botanical Garden (seasonal), and across the bridge Sand Island with the Church of St. Mary on the Sand. For the classic postcard view of the island over the Oder, head to the riverside promenades opposite.
