Korfantów Castle

The late-Renaissance castle in Korfantów, formerly Friedland, stands on a low hill on the north-western edge of the town. Three wings arranged in a horseshoe enclose a quadrangular courtyard open to the west, while on the east the whole complex is closed off by a gate building with outbuildings. A tall square tower rises in the north-eastern corner, and a squat round tower can be seen on the southern side.

History of the residence

The year 1616 is accepted as the date of its construction, when the castle was reportedly built by Pilchner; in the 18th and 19th centuries it was enlarged three times. Until 1945 it served as the seat of the owners of the Friedland estate, including the Schaffgotsch, Redern, Mettich and Pückler families. After the war the deserted castle fell prey to scavengers, and by the 1960s it was a ruin — what survived includes two late-Renaissance portals, inner and outer, and the stone portal with the main entrance in the central part.

The castle today

The castle now houses the Opole Rehabilitation Centre, which cost the building many of its stylistic features; the interiors are used by the hospital, so sightseeing is limited to the exterior and its surroundings. The monument is surrounded by a park laid out around 1800, with valuable oaks aged 300–400 years. The castle complex was entered in the register of monuments in 1950, and nearby stands the imposing Holy Trinity church. Address: ul. Wyzwolenia 11.
