Niemodlin Castle

Niemodlin Castle is a ducal residence in the Opole region, with a history reaching back to a medieval stronghold. Its present form combines Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque features. A park with paths, mature trees and fallow deer surrounds the castle.

From stronghold to residence

In 1313, Niemodlin became the seat of Duke Bolko I of Niemodlin. The castle was destroyed during the Hussite invasion of 1428 and later rebuilt. Between 1578 and 1589, the main elements of the late-Renaissance complex were created, including the wing with a gate tower and sgraffito decoration. Baroque changes followed in the 18th century, when the bridge over the moat was decorated with four saints.

What you can see

The official route includes the courtyard, chapel, underground rooms and cellars. It lists crypts, an icon gallery, armoury, tunnels, an alchemy exhibition, a torture chamber, a ceramics display and a medieval heating system known as a hypocaust. Leave time for the park and the Renaissance bridge.

Planning your visit

The interior is visited with a guide and takes around 45–60 minutes; tours start on the hour. The regulations require a reservation. From April to October, individual visits run Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 16:00 and on Saturdays and Sundays until 18:00; different hours apply from November to March.
