St Peter and Paul Church in Ścinawa Nyska

On a steep hill in Ścinawa Nyska, a village in the Korfantów commune between the town and Nysa, stands the masonry church of St Peter and Paul. A Gothic church — perhaps even a Romanesque one — stood here before: it certainly existed in 1302, and its reminder is the Renaissance tower from around 1585.

The tower that survived

The present church was built in the mid-18th century in the Baroque style: masonry, oriented, buttressed, with chapels along the sides. On the axis of the facade rises a four-storey tower — the top storey articulated with arcades, covered in sgraffito and crowned with an attic — the only part that survived from the earlier building.

Regency and Willmann

The interior is covered with sail vaults. The high altar takes the Regence form, with figures of St Jude Thaddeus and St John the Evangelist; there are also four side altars, one in each chapel, a finely carved pulpit, a baptismal font and an organ. A curiosity is the set of fourteen paintings attributed, through analogies to the canvases of the Lubiąż abbey, to Michael Willmann.

In practice

The church is reached via Nyska street. Its setting is made up of old lime trees, a fieldstone wall, stone steps and a Renaissance gate — 20–30 minutes is enough for a visit.
