Princely Stables in Pszczyna

A few steps from the Pszczyna castle, on the park side, stands a complex of buildings where the Hochbergs kept their horses and carriages. The Princely Stables on Basztowa Street were built in the second half of the 19th century and count among the best-preserved outbuildings of a residence in a city known as the Pearl of Upper Silesia.

Built in stages

The complex grew in stages: the coach house was erected in 1864, the stables with a tack room in 1866–1867, and the riding hall was begun in 1869. A curiosity is the masonry garage for nine princely cars, added in 1904–1910 — evidence of the times when the automobile began to replace the carriage.

The stables today

The grounds host permanent and temporary exhibitions run by the Castle Museum, and a café operates in one of the buildings. A visit naturally combines with the park: a pond with waterfowl lies nearby, and further on stretch broad avenues and a Teahouse on an island. A short walk leads to the castle and the market square.
