Silesian Press Museum in Pszczyna

In an 18th-century town house at 26 Piastowska Street, about 200 metres from the Pszczyna market square, operates the Wojciech Korfanty Silesian Press Museum — the only institution in Poland where visitors can print a sheet themselves on an old printing press. The museum lies on the Monuments of Technology Trail.

1845 and 1985

The opening fell on 5 July 1985 — exactly 140 years after the first Polish newspaper in Upper Silesia appeared. "Tygodnik Polski Poświęcony Włościanom" (The Polish Weekly Devoted to Peasants) was printed in Pszczyna in 1845–1846. The founder was the Society of Friends of the Pszczyna Land, and in 1990 the museum took the name of Wojciech Korfanty — the "leader of the Silesian people" and creator of the most popular Polish newspapers in Silesia.

Korfanty's office and printing presses

Among the exhibits are printing machines and bookbinding equipment, plus a large collection of patriotic newspapers and magazines. A curiosity is the recreated Korfanty office with original furniture, photographs and press copies. Despite its small size, the museum has assembled a rich collection — a visit, including printing on the old machines, takes about an hour.

Practicalities

The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday 10.00–14.00, and in the season from April to September also on Sundays 14.00–18.00. Tickets: regular PLN 10, reduced PLN 5. Contact: tel. +48 32 210-16-27. Pszczyna deserves a full tour — from the museum you can reach the castle with its park in a dozen or so minutes on foot through the town.
