St George's Church in Goczałkowice-Zdrój

St George’s Church in Goczałkowice-Zdrój is an important landmark of the spa town and a reminder of a history that predates the development of the resort. The masonry church stands on Główna Street, close to the centre and the road towards Pszczyna.

From a wooden church to the present building

The previous church, dedicated to St George and St Adalbert, was wooden and dated from the 16th century; 1534 is the traditional date. It burned down in 1908. The present masonry church was built on the site in 1909–1910. The construction was financed by the Prince of Pszczyna, and the church was consecrated in December 1910. The building therefore reflects both the older parish history and Goczałkowice’s transformation into a spa town.

A church in the spa landscape

The church works best as part of a local walk. Its position on the main street preserves a clear link with the former village, while spa and natural attractions lie nearby. Combine the visit with Kapias Gardens, a walk near the Goczałkowice Reservoir or a trip to the castle in Pszczyna. Also look for the separate Chapel of Our Lady of the Consolation of the Sick, built in 1866.

The church is at 50 Główna Street in Goczałkowice-Zdrój. It is an active church, so check current service times and interior access before entering. It makes a good short stop during a spa stay or a journey between Pszczyna, Goczałkowice Reservoir and Kapias Gardens; allow about 20–30 minutes.
