Castles
Pszczyna, Silesian
Pszczyna Castle (say "PSHCHI-na") is a former princely residence in southern Poland that now houses one of the country's best-preserved aristocratic interiors. Around 80% of its furnishings are originals from the days of the Hochberg princes, including the rooms of the British-born Princess Daisy and the apartment used by Kaiser Wilhelm II. Set right on the town square with a vast landscape park behind it, the castle is one of the top things to do within easy reach of Katowice and Kraków.
The brick castle dates from the first half of the 15th century and withstood a Hussite attack in 1433. It later passed to the Thurzo and Promnitz families, then to the princes of Anhalt-Köthen, and from 1847 to the Hochberg family. Rebuilt several times after fires, the castle took its current French neo-Baroque form in 1870–1876 to plans by the Paris architect Hippolyte Destailleur. The composer Georg Philipp Telemann spent time here in 1704–1707, and a music festival in his honor still fills the castle every October.
The best-known resident was Princess Daisy of Pless, born Mary Theresa Cornwallis-West, who married Prince Hans Heinrich XV in London in 1891. During World War I the castle hosted the German army's Great Headquarters, and Kaiser Wilhelm II, Hindenburg and Ludendorff worked here. The interiors came through World War II largely intact. The museum opened on May 9, 1946, so 2026 marks its 80th anniversary. Since 2021 the castle-and-park complex has been a Historic Monument of Poland.
The displays cover almost 3,000 m² (about 32,000 sq ft), so allow 2.5 to 3 hours to see everything.
Behind the castle lies an English-style landscape park of about 156 hectares (385 acres) with ponds, bridges and old trees, open all year. A walk through it leads to the European bison enclosure in the area known as Zwierzyniec, where you can watch the animals from a viewing platform.
Accessibility note: the elevator is being modernized, so wheelchair users currently cannot move between floors and the accessible restroom is unavailable. Call ahead (+48 32 210 30 37) to check progress.
Pszczyna lies on the S1 expressway between Katowice and Bielsko-Biała. Regional trains run from Katowice to Pszczyna station, a short walk from the castle. Katowice Airport and Kraków Airport are the nearest international gateways; from Kraków the drive is typically around 1.5 hours. Drivers can use paid municipal parking near the town center. The castle address is ul. Brama Wybrańców 1.
Absolutely, if you enjoy grand interiors with real stories behind them – Princess Daisy's life and the Kaiser's wartime stay make the rooms come alive. Spring and early fall are the nicest times for the park; October adds evening concerts. Pair the visit with the bison enclosure and the open-air village museum nearby.
