Gałów Palace

On the Bystrzyca river, a dozen or so kilometres west of Wrocław, a tower and jagged gables rise out of the riverside woods: this is Gałów Palace. Today it is a complete ruin, yet the crumbling façade still carries the coats of arms of its former owners and a German motto that reads rather bitterly in this setting. It makes a good short trip by bike or car, as long as you look at it from outside the fence only.

History: from the Seidlitz family to a state farm

A residence in Gałów (German: Gross Gohlau) appears in court records from 1561 as the property of the von Seidlitz family. An engraving from around 1780 shows an older palace with a roughly horseshoe-shaped plan, an open courtyard and a low, tree-lined earth bank. The present building dates from the 19th century and was altered again in the early 20th century.

After 1945 the estate was taken over by the state. In the 1970s the building was still partly inhabited and run by a PGR, a communist-era state agricultural farm. In 1998 the roof was deliberately set on fire, and the palace has been decaying ever since. The complex also includes a park from the second half of the 19th century, two outbuildings, a fire station and a farm building.

What to look for

• The panel with the coats of arms of the von Roeder and von Bonin families, dated 1866, commemorating the marriage of Albrecht von Roeder and Elisabeth von Bonin.
• The inscription above the main entrance: "Halte was du hast" ("Hold fast to what you have"), dated 1874.
• The tower and gables, best seen from the park side, especially in autumn and winter when the trees are bare.
• The park, which blends almost seamlessly into the riverside forest of the Bystrzyca Valley Landscape Park.

Tripto tip

The ruin stands on private land. According to a visitor's account from 2023, the site is fenced, marked as private property and monitored, and entry beyond the fence is forbidden. The walls are at risk of collapse, so keep well away from them. There are no ticket offices, opening hours or fees. The palace itself takes 20–30 minutes; allow longer if you add a walk along the Bystrzyca. Park in the village without blocking any driveways.

In the same municipality of Miękinia, it is worth stopping at the moated 16th-century Wojnowice Castle and at the Jaworek Vineyard in Miękinia, one of the largest vineyards in Poland. The municipality is best explored by bike, as new cycle routes keep appearing, including along the Bystrzyca valley.
