The District of Four Denominations in Wrocław (also called the District of Mutual Respect) is a small corner of the Old Town where a synagogue, an Orthodox cathedral, a Roman Catholic church and a Lutheran church all stand within about 300 m (1,000 ft) of each other. Just five minutes' walk from the Market Square, it tells the story of a city shaped by Germans, Czechs, Poles and Jews – and it's one of the most rewarding walks in Wrocław, with cafés, galleries and courtyards along the way.
The area between Kazimierza Wielkiego, św. Antoniego, Włodkowica and św. Mikołaja streets has never been an official district. The name was coined in 1995 by Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant clergy together with Jewish community activist Jerzy Kichler. Since then the four congregations have held joint ecumenical prayers, charity events and educational meetings, and a foundation organizes walks and workshops.
Allow about an hour to walk around, or two hours if you go inside. Each congregation sets its own visiting rules and services take priority, so check times locally or book a guided walk. The synagogue is reached through a gateway from Włodkowica Street into a courtyard; on Saturdays (Shabbat) and Jewish holidays it is used mainly for prayer. Dress modestly in all four buildings.
This is a great walk for anyone curious about Central Europe's tangled history. The streets are flat and stroller-friendly. Come on a weekday morning, when the buildings are more likely to be open, and return in the evening for the courtyards on Włodkowica.
Włodkowica Street and its courtyards are among Wrocław's liveliest evening spots. Look for the Neon Side Gallery of restored communist-era neon signs, the New Horizons cinema, the Small Synagogue and the Jewish Community building. The Royal Palace, home to a branch of the Wrocław City Museum, is just around the corner.
The district is about a 5-minute walk west of the Market Square. Many tram and bus lines stop on Kazimierza Wielkiego Street. Wrocław Airport lies about 10 km west of the center.
