Co-Cathedral of St John the Baptist in Kamień Pomorski

The Co-Cathedral of St John the Baptist in Kamień Pomorski is one of the most valuable historic sites in West Pomerania. The brick church stands on Cathedral Hill, and its story reaches back to the foundation of 1176 and the transfer of the Pomeranian bishops’ seat from Wolin. Today it is an active church, a historic monument and a venue for organ concerts.

History and architecture

Construction of the masonry cathedral began in 1176. It was enlarged and altered over the following centuries, and after the Reformation the church belonged to Lutherans for several centuries. It returned to the Catholic Church after 1945 and has been a co-cathedral of the Archdiocese of Szczecin-Kamień since 1972. The cathedral complex and its surroundings were designated a Monument of History in 2005.

What to see inside

The most unusual feature is the medieval roof truss, regarded as the oldest surviving structure of its kind in Poland. Inside, look for the late-Gothic altar, choir stalls, chapels and Gothic details. The organs are another important part of the site’s heritage: since 1964 they have hosted the International Festival of Organ and Chamber Music.

The cathedral remains a place of worship, so access can depend on services, concerts and current maintenance. Check parish notices and the festival programme before travelling. Combine the visit with Cathedral Hill, a walk along the Kamień Lagoon and the old town of Kamień Pomorski.
