Dorota Hill in Będzin

St Dorothy’s Hill, popularly known as Dorotka, rises in Będzin’s Grodziec district. The hill is 382 m above sea level and makes a good short walk away from city traffic. A historic church of St Dorothy, built in 1635, stands at the top, while walking and pilgrimage routes pass through the surrounding area.

St Dorothy’s Church

The brick-and-stone church was founded by Dorota Kącka, abbess of the Norbertine convent in Kraków’s Zwierzyniec district, and consecrated in 1638. Its interior contains three altars, but the building should not be assumed to be permanently open: access depends on services and the arrangements of its caretakers. Local traditions also connect the hill with an older cult and an alleged apparition in 1865; present these as local tradition rather than verified history.

Walking and trails

You can approach Dorotka on the green trail; the red Polish Hussars Trail and the Via Regia pilgrimage route, the Way of St James, also cross the hill. The wooded slopes are enjoyable year-round, especially in autumn. It is a good destination for a roughly half-hour walk or a short stop while exploring Będzin and the Zagłębie region.

Practical information

The hill can be visited year-round. By car, head towards Fryderyka Chopina Street and check current access and parking details before travelling. The area around the church is not a conventional ticketed attraction. Wear comfortable footwear, especially after rain, and remember that the church grounds are a place of worship; keep quiet during services.
