Pogoria III Reservoir

Pogoria III in Dąbrowa Górnicza (say "DOM-brova goor-NEE-cha") is the most popular lake for summer fun in Poland's Upper Silesian metropolitan area: a man-made lake of about 205 hectares (500 acres) with a city beach, lifeguarded swimming area, wooden pier and an asphalt loop for walking and cycling. It fills a flooded sand pit once dug to supply coal mines, and is now known for its clear water, sailing and diving.

Where it is and how to get there

Dąbrowa Górnicza lies just northeast of Katowice; Pogoria III is about 15 km (9 miles) from central Katowice and some 17 km from Katowice Airport, while Kraków is roughly 60 km away as the crow flies. The main beach is on the south shore, on Malinowe Górki Street. Travel guides mention a paid car park for about 100 cars by the beach, plus private seasonal lots along Siewierska Street; you can also reach the lake from Zakładowa Street and the Łęknice housing estate. On hot weekends, arrive early.

A lake made by mining

Pogoria I, II, III and IV form the so-called Dąbrowa Lake District. All four fill former sand pits: the sand was used to backfill exhausted coal-mine tunnels. Pogoria III reaches a maximum depth of about 18 m (59 ft) and also serves as a reserve water source for the local steelworks. Its clarity owes much to zebra mussels that filter the water. The whole lake is a quiet zone.

Things to do at Pogoria III

• Beach and swimming: the free city beach has beach volleyball, playgrounds, food stands and toilets. The lifeguarded swimming area operates in summer only – in 2026 from June 13 to August 31.
• The pier: a wooden pier with lanterns and a small lookout tower, perfect for sunsets.
• Sailing and windsurfing: the Pogoria 3 Yacht Club is based here, regattas are held, and rentals offer sailboats, windsurf boards and kayaks in season. In winter, when the ice is thick enough, iceboats appear.
• Diving: clear water makes Pogoria III one of the region's notable dive sites.
• Walking and cycling: an asphalt loop of about 6 km circles the lake; a new bike path opened in summer 2026, and in October 2026 the city was still upgrading the Łęknice headland, so expect some construction.

Is it worth visiting?

If you are staying in Katowice or Kraków and want a relaxed day by the water, yes – especially for families, cyclists and anyone who enjoys a beach without driving to the Baltic. Outside summer it is a peaceful place for a walk. Swimming outside the designated area or season is unsupervised. Signage is in Polish.

The other Pogoria lakes and nearby

Each Pogoria lake has its own character. Pogoria I (75 ha) has sailing club marinas and holiday centers. Shallow Pogoria II (about 25 ha) is a protected bird habitat where swimming and boating are banned. The largest, Pogoria IV (about 560 ha), is a flood-control reservoir open to sailing but closed to swimming. Further afield are the Błędów Desert, Będzin Castle and the Egzotarium in Sosnowiec.
