Staw Rzęsa Pond in Siemianowice Śląskie

Staw Rzęsa in Siemianowice Śląskie may look unassuming, yet it is the largest pond in the city and one of the most interesting natural sites in Upper Silesia. It spreads in the heart of Bażantarnia, a family recreation zone crossed by walking and cycling paths. A causeway cuts through the water, and benches stand by the banks inviting you to rest.

Life by the water

Swans, ducks and coots swim on Rzęsa, and in the reeds nests the penduline tit, one of the more interesting passerine birds of Silesia. In March frogs gather here for mating, which impresses young observers. The pond is also a paradise for anglers. The landscape changes with every angle, so it is worth walking around the entire water body.

Where the water comes from

For decades the pond was fed with water from the nearby Siemianowice mine. When the Michał district was closed at the beginning of the 21st century, the water level dropped so much that the pond almost dried up. A deep well and collected rainwater saved it, and the water surface persists to this day. It is an interesting example of how urban nature copes after the departure of industry.

Bażantarnia around the pond

Near the pond you will find the Dinosaur Meadow with models of prehistoric reptiles, two wooden playgrounds, a brine graduation tower, a beach and a dog run. Everything, including the car park on Spacerowa avenue, is free of charge. After your visit, head to the Donnersmarck Palace on Chopina street, where a café and the Palace Brewery already operate after renovation.
