Jeziorsko

Jeziorsko Reservoir is a large storage reservoir on the Warta, located between Warta and Skęczniew on the border of the Łódź and Greater Poland regions. Its southern section is an important refuge for water and wetland birds. It is a destination for visitors interested in wildlife watching, river-valley landscapes and quiet time by the water.

The reservoir and its water cycle

The reservoir entered operation in 1986 and a hydroelectric plant opened in 1995. Its primary role is flood protection. A distinctive feature is the seasonal lowering of the water level: in summer and autumn, shallow pools and exposed muddy parts of the bottom appear in the southern section. This cycle creates feeding grounds for migrating birds.

Nature reserve and Natura 2000

Jeziorsko Nature Reserve was established in 1998 to protect a wetland-bird refuge, including rare and threatened species. The reservoir and surrounding areas form the Jeziorsko Reservoir Natura 2000 Special Protection Area, PLB100002. The main reason to visit is to observe seasonal bird concentrations rather than the hydraulic infrastructure itself.

Planning a visit

Access to the shoreline varies, and parts of the area are protected. Use legal access points and check current rules before entering the reserve area. Binoculars, quiet behaviour and footwear suitable for mud are useful for birdwatching. Walking and cycling sections run around the reservoir, while selected settlements offer marinas, bathing areas or holiday facilities; availability may depend on the season.
