Kalisz Piast Stronghold (Zawodzie Archaeological Reserve)

Before Kalisz moved to the right bank of the Prosna, its heart was a fortress on a marshy island in Zawodzie. The stronghold, built in the 860s, was one of the key centres of the early Piast state, Poland's first ruling dynasty, and in the 12th century Duke Mieszko III the Old founded a collegiate church here in which he was later buried. Today the site is the "Kalisz Piast Stronghold" Archaeological Reserve, a branch of the Regional Museum of the Kalisz Land, with a rebuilt palisade, huts and the outline of a Romanesque church.

History: from tribal fort to ducal seat

The first stronghold stood on a sandy island among the waters of the Prosna and was enlarged twice, to about 17,500 m². In 1106 it was captured and burned by Bolesław III Wrymouth in his fight with his brother Zbigniew, as the chronicler Gallus Anonymus recorded. Its heyday came under Mieszko III the Old, who set up a mint here and built the stone collegiate church of St Paul; during his reign Kalisz was, with Poznań and Gniezno, one of the three main strongholds of Greater Poland. In 1233 the fort was taken by the Silesian duke Henry the Bearded, and the town moved across the river. Excavations began in 1903 under Włodzimierz Demetrykiewicz, with the largest campaigns in 1958–1965 and 1983–1992.

What to see

• Palisade with bridge and gate – you enter through the gatehouse, which holds the ticket office and a small exhibition.
• Outline of St Paul's collegiate church – the ground floor of the Romanesque church rebuilt at 1:1 scale; Mieszko III the Old (d. 1202) and his son Mieszko the Younger were buried here.
• Seven wooden huts, a two-level defensive tower, box ramparts and a stone burial mound.
• An 18th-century cottage moved from Kalisz's old town, in the ethnographic section.
• Animals and a three-field plot – sheep, goats, hens and bees are kept on site.

The buildings were reconstructed in 2007–2008 with EU funding, based on the excavation results. All of them stand where archaeologists found traces of the stronghold's original buildings.

Did you know?

Beneath the foundations of the Romanesque church archaeologists found traces of a wooden church from around the year 1000, regarded as one of the two oldest wooden churches on Polish soil. Right next to the reserve stands the wooden St Adalbert's Church of 1798; its Romanesque holy-water stoup probably came from the collegiate church. In 2007 soil from the ducal crypt was placed in urns in this church and in the Cistercian abbey at Ląd.

Tripto tip

The reserve is on ul. Bolesława Pobożnego, about 2 km from the centre. In the summer season (1 May – 31 October) it opens Tuesday to Sunday, until 18:00 on Thursdays and weekends and until 15:30 on other days; in winter it closes at 15:30 every day except Monday, when it is shut. Admission is free on Tuesdays. The museum lists tickets at PLN 20 standard, PLN 12 reduced and PLN 40 for a family; last entry is 30 minutes before closing. A free municipal car park is about 200 m from the entrance, and bus 3A from the station takes about 15 minutes. Allow 1–1.5 hours, and book a guide by phone – without one the church outline is easy to miss. Renovation work started on site in July 2026, but the museum does not expect it to affect visits.
