Gardens
Kalisz, Greater Poland
The City Park in Kalisz (pronounced roughly "KAH-leesh") is a leafy riverside park in central Poland whose history goes back to 1798, making it one of the oldest public parks in the country. In the 19th century it was considered Poland's most beautiful public garden. Today it is a relaxed green space of old trees, canals and little bridges, a few minutes' walk from the main square, and an easy add-on to a day exploring one of Poland's oldest towns.
Kalisz lies in the Greater Poland region, roughly halfway between Wrocław, Poznań and Łódź. By car it takes about two hours from Wrocław (around 125 km) or Poznań, and a little less from Łódź. Poznań and Wrocław have the nearest international airports. The park sits just southeast of the Old Town, on the Prosna River and two side canals.
The town decided to create the park in 1798, laying out a "wild garden" on former pastures and an old Jesuit garden. After a major flood in 1840, the river was regulated with two new canals, and the park grew onto the opposite bank. In 1843 a round pond with an island gazebo was dug; it was nicknamed Kogutek ("little rooster") after the tin rooster on the gazebo roof and served as a skating rink in winter.
Much of the layout you see today comes from a redesign in the 1880s by garden designers Edmund Jankowski and Franciszek Szanior, after a hurricane and flood damaged the park. The oldest section keeps its English landscape-garden style, and the park has been a protected heritage site since 1964.
The park covers more than 20 hectares (about 50 acres) with over 4,000 trees and shrubs and 28 natural monuments – trees protected for their age or size. Look out for:
Allow about an hour for a loop of the main paths, or two to three hours if you combine it with the Old Town. Spring flowers along the canals and the gold of the old trees in October are the highlights. Paths are paved, so strollers are fine, and there is plenty of lawn for kids.
On its own the park is a pleasant break rather than a destination, but if you are in Kalisz it is a must: pair it with St. Nicholas Cathedral, the town hall tower and the medieval Dorotka Tower for a well-rounded half day.
