Castles
Gołuchów, Greater Poland
Gołuchów Castle (say: go-WOO-hoof) is a fairy-tale château in western Poland that has housed a branch of the National Museum in Poznań since 1951. Rebuilt in the 19th century by Princess Izabela Działyńska, née Czartoryska, in the spirit of the Loire Valley châteaux, it sits in a vast arboretum with free-roaming paths and a European bison enclosure. If you are looking for things to do between Poznań and Wrocław, it is one of the most photogenic castles in the Greater Poland region and an easy half-day trip.
Gołuchów is a village in Greater Poland (Wielkopolska), about 9 miles (15 km) north-west of the city of Kalisz on national road 12. The nearest large cities are Poznań, roughly two hours away by car, and Wrocław, at a similar distance. Both have international airports. Without a car, take a train to Kalisz and continue by regional bus or taxi; renting a car is the simplest option if you want to combine the castle with other sights.
The first fortified Renaissance residence was built in 1550–1560 for Rafał Leszczyński, a member of one of the most powerful noble families of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In the mid-19th century the estate was bought by Tytus Działyński for his son Jan and his wife Izabela, daughter of the Czartoryski princes – the family behind Poland's first museum in Puławy. Between 1875 and 1885 Izabela turned the old house into a romantic château-museum, inspired by French Renaissance castles. She filled it with art, including a famous collection of ancient Greek vases excavated in southern Italy. During World War II the collections were scattered and the interiors damaged; the museum reopened under the National Museum in Poznań after the war.
Visits run in groups of up to 30 people, entering every half hour with a gallery attendant (not a guide). Plan about an hour for the castle. Highlights include:
Labels and staff are mainly Polish; if you want an English-language tour, contact the museum well in advance to ask whether a guide is available.
The castle stands in a landscaped park of about 158 hectares (390 acres) stretching along the Ciemna river valley, with around 600 species and varieties of trees and shrubs. The park is managed by the State Forests' Forest Culture Centre and is open from dawn to dusk, free of charge. On its edge is a wildlife enclosure founded in 1977, home to European bison (wisent), Polish konik horses, fallow deer and wild boar – also free. A separate Forestry Museum in the former outbuildings charges its own admission. Is it worth visiting? If you enjoy castles, gardens and wildlife in a quiet setting, absolutely – allow half a day.
The castle has three floors, steps at the entrance, no elevator and no accessible restroom, so wheelchair users will find the interiors difficult. The park paths are a good alternative. Children usually enjoy the bison enclosure more than the museum rooms, so plan the castle first and the walk afterwards.
