Kalisz, Greater Poland
St. Nicholas Cathedral in Kalisz (pronounced roughly "KAH-leesh") is the oldest church in one of Poland's oldest towns: a red-brick Gothic building founded in the 13th century and, since 1992, the cathedral of the Diocese of Kalisz. Behind its plain exterior lies a richly decorated interior with a Baroque high altar built for a painting from Rubens's workshop, Renaissance vaulting and a striking patriotic chapel. It is free to enter and sits a few minutes' walk from the main square.
Kalisz lies in the Greater Poland region of central-western Poland, about two hours by car from Wrocław, Poznań or Łódź (roughly 120–145 km). The nearest international airports are in Poznań and Wrocław. The cathedral stands at Kanonicka 5, in the northwest corner of the Old Town.
According to the parish, Duke Bolesław the Pious and his wife, Blessed Jolenta, founded the church between 1253 and 1257. A document from 1303 already names it the town's oldest church. In 1358 King Casimir the Great handed it to the Canons Regular of the Lateran, who stayed for more than 450 years until their order was dissolved here in 1810. Kings Casimir the Great and Władysław Jagiełło are said to have prayed here.
Fires repeatedly damaged the building. After one of them, Albin Fontana began rebuilding in 1612, adding Baroque features and stucco work. The town and church suffered again in 1706, during a battle between Swedish and Saxon forces, and after another fire in 1792 the Prussian authorities, who then ruled Kalisz, planned to demolish the church in 1806 before dropping the idea. In 1992 it became a cathedral, and Pope John Paul II prayed here privately on June 4, 1997.
In 1621 Piotr Żeromski, a Polish envoy to the Netherlands, bought "The Descent from the Cross" from Rubens's studio in Antwerp, and a Baroque high altar was built for it in 1662. On the night of December 13–14, 1973, the painting was probably stolen, and the altar was set on fire to cover the tracks. The original's fate remains uncertain, and a copy now hangs in its place.
