Museums
Opatówek, Greater Poland
The Museum of the History of Industry in Opatówek occupies the Fiedler family's neoclassical cloth factory, built in 1824–1826 – a building that is itself a monument of technology. Its timber frame survives across five storeys together with cast-iron stairs, and inside you will find steam engines, looms, printing presses and one of Poland's largest collections of historic pianos. It makes a good half-day trip near Kalisz, also with children who love machines.
The cloth factory was built during the industrialisation of the Kingdom of Poland, when an industrial district was growing up around Kalisz; high-quality cloth was made here from 1826 until the Great Depression in the 20th century. The complex is regarded as the only surviving industrial ensemble in Europe from the first half of the 19th century in which every stage of production can be traced – from raw material to finished product. The museum was founded on 1 January 1981, opened to visitors in 1991, and entered in the State Register of Museums in 1998 (no. 45). In 2025 it won the Grand Prix of the Izabella 2024 competition for converting the historic west wing to museum use.
The former factory interiors house eight permanent exhibitions and one temporary show, and the collection numbers about 12,000 objects.
The largest collection in this nominally technical museum consists of musical instruments – sources differ, giving more than 50 or more than 60 pianos made between 1820 and 1939. The museum also owns chasubles and stoles of John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis, shown alongside historic vestments from churches in Opatówek and Gyżyce – but this exhibition is currently on display at the County Office (Starostwo Powiatowe) in Kalisz, not in Opatówek.
The museum is at ul. Kościelna 1. According to its official website it is open Monday to Friday 08:00–15:30 and on Sundays 11:00–16:00; on Saturdays it admits only groups of at least 10 by prior arrangement, and last entry is one hour before closing. A standard ticket costs PLN 15, reduced PLN 10, and on Wednesdays admission to the exhibitions is free (with a free ticket collected at the desk). A guide costs PLN 50. A visit takes about 2 hours. The museum is closed on major holidays, including 1 and 6 January, Easter, Corpus Christi, 15 August, 1 and 11 November and 24–26 December.
