Observation Tower on Barania Góra

The Barania Góra observation tower ("ba-RAH-nya GOO-ra") is a 15-meter steel lookout on the summit of the second-highest peak in Poland's Silesian Beskids. From its deck, on a clear day, you can see the High Tatras, Babia Góra and ranges in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, while the springs of the Vistula — Poland's longest river — rise on the slopes below. Free to climb and reopened after repairs in 2024, it crowns one of the best hikes near Wisła.

Where it is and how to get there

Barania Góra rises above the resort town of Wisła in Silesia, southern Poland, close to the Czech and Slovak borders. Wisła is about 100 km (roughly 1.5 hours) by car from Katowice and about 150 km (2 to 2.5 hours) from Kraków. Most hikers start in the district of Wisła Czarne, where trailheads have parking.

There's no road or lift to the top — you walk. Approximate ascent times:

• Blue trail from Wisła Czarne up the Biała Wisełka valley, past the Rodło Cascades waterfalls: about 2.5 hours
• Black then red trail from Wisła Czarne via the Czarna Wisełka valley and the Przysłop mountain hut: about 2.5 hours
• Red trail from the Przysłop hut: about 1 hour
• Black trail from Kamesznica on the eastern side: about 3 hours
• Green trail along the ridge from Skrzyczne: about 3.5 hours

A popular loop (about 16 km, 650 m of climbing) goes up one valley and down the other. Poland's long-distance Main Beskid Trail also crosses the summit.

The mountain and the tower

The summit stands at 1,215 m (3,986 ft); the often-quoted 1,220 m refers to a survey marker on top of a concrete pillar almost 5 m high. The top and the Vistula's spring area are protected as the Barania Góra nature reserve (386 ha).

The tower was built with money raised by the public and opened in 1991. For more than 30 years the Polish Tourist Society (PTTK) branch in Katowice maintained it, but in April 2024 it was closed because of its poor condition. The PTTK branch in Wisła took it over that May, restored it with help from local donors and institutions, and reopened it in the fall of 2024.

What you'll see

Because the deck rises above the spruce forest, you get a full 360-degree view. According to the local news portal ox.pl, clear days reveal the Tatra Mountains, Babia Góra and the Żywiec Beskids, the Little Beskids, and in Slovakia the Malá Fatra and other ranges, plus the Moravian-Silesian Beskids in the Czech Republic. Fall and crisp winter mornings tend to give the sharpest views; summer haze can hide the Tatras.

Practical tips

• Admission: free, no opening hours (as of October 2026). The tower may close temporarily in storms, icing or for maintenance.
• Safety: the summit is exposed; don't climb a steel tower during a thunderstorm, and bring a warm layer even in summer.
• Food and rest: the PTTK Przysłop hut (about 900 m) is an hour below the summit and is the nearest place for a hot meal.
• Money: Poland uses the złoty (PLN); carry some cash for mountain huts.
• Language: trail signs are in Polish but use color-coded markings that are easy to follow.

Is it worth it?

If you enjoy hiking, yes: it's a moderate day walk with waterfalls, old forest, the Vistula's springs and a panoramic finish. Non-hikers should look elsewhere — there's no shortcut to the top.

Nearby

On the way down the blue trail you'll pass the Rodło Cascades, about 25 small waterfalls. In Wisła Czarne, the reservoir of Lake Czerniańskie and the 1930s Presidential Castle round off the day.
