Kazimierz Dolny, Lublin
Korzeniowy Dół (roughly "ko-zheh-NYOH-vih DOOW"), the "Root Gully", is the most famous loess ravine in Kazimierz Dolny, a small historic town on the Vistula River in eastern Poland. It is a sunken lane about 400 meters long, its walls laced with the exposed roots of old trees, and for years it was one of the most photographed spots in the region. Important: the ravine has been closed until further notice since 2025 for safety reasons. Here is what happened and where to see similar gullies instead.
Kazimierz Dolny is about 150 km (around 2 hours by car) southeast of Warsaw and roughly 60 km west of Lublin, which has the nearest airport. Korzeniowy Dół lies about 2.5 km east of the town's market square, off Doły Street. There is no train station in Kazimierz; the nearest is in Puławy, about 14 km away, with bus connections.
On June 5, 2025, a large branch fell on a school group from Warsaw, injuring 10 people. The town closed the ravine and commissioned an expert assessment of the trees. It briefly reopened in September 2025, now free of charge (it previously cost 4 PLN), but it was closed again in 2026 and, as of October 2026, remains off-limits. Old trees cling to the edges and their roots are exposed by erosion, so please respect the ban.
Korzeniowy Dół is a sunken lane, protected as a natural monument: a cart track that over centuries cut deeper and deeper into soft, wind-blown loess soil, creating a U-shaped corridor. The area around Kazimierz has one of the densest networks of gullies in Europe, with roughly 10–11 km of ravines per square kilometer inside the Kazimierz Landscape Park.
The ravine is one stop on a 6.5 km educational trail (about 2–2.5 hours, 10 stops) that starts and ends on the market square. You can still walk the rest of it:
Local guides now take visitors to other gullies such as Na Borowskich, Zagłoski Dół, and Na Przychodnia. Two of these are still used as access roads, so watch for cars. Don't climb the walls or roots, and avoid gullies in strong wind or right after heavy rain.
Not while it is closed, but the surrounding gullies offer a very similar experience and are free. Late fall and winter, when the leaves are down, show the root formations best. Signage is mostly in Polish. Ask at the tourist information center on Lubelska Street for the current status. Families can walk the trail easily, but keep children off the loess walls and dogs on a leash; after rain the sunken lanes get muddy and slippery for strollers.
