Landscape parks
Kazimierz Dolny, Lublin
Kazimierz Landscape Park (Kazimierski Park Krajobrazowy) is the oldest protected landscape park in Poland's Lublin region, wrapped around the historic river town of Kazimierz Dolny (say "KAH-zhee-myesh DOL-nee"). It protects a wild, unregulated stretch of the Vistula River, white limestone cliffs, flower-rich steppe grasslands, and one of the densest networks of loess ravines in Europe. If you are looking for things to do around Kazimierz beyond the market square, this is where to hike and cycle.
The park lies in eastern Poland, about 150 km (around 2 hours by car) southeast of Warsaw and roughly 60 km west of Lublin, whose airport is the nearest. It covers 149.74 km², plus a buffer zone of 246.44 km², stretching across Kazimierz Dolny, Janowiec, Bochotnica, Nałęczów, Wąwolnica, and the outskirts of Puławy. The nearest railway station is in Puławy, with buses onward to Kazimierz.
Created on April 27, 1979, the park sits on Cretaceous limestone formed in a warm, shallow sea; quarries in the area still reveal ammonites and belemnites. During the Ice Ages, wind dumped layers of fine loess dust up to more than 30 m thick. Rain has carved that soft soil into countless ravines, reaching a record 11 km of gullies per km² on part of the Nałęczów Plateau. The most dramatic are sunken lanes, old cart tracks worn deep into the ground.
Between Podgórz and Janowiec the Vistula squeezes into a gorge just over a kilometer wide, with the right bank rising up to 90 m above the river. Here the Vistula still behaves like a wild river, with islands and sandbars. The historic town of Kazimierz Dolny at the park's heart is listed as a national Monument of History.
The warm, south-facing slopes host rare steppe plants such as spring pheasant's eye, feather grass and lady's slipper orchid.
Entry is free and the landscape is open year-round. Good bases are Kazimierz Dolny, Janowiec, Bochotnica and Parchatka. Popular routes include a 10.4 km walk or ride from Kazimierz to Bochotnica past a ruined castle, a 22.4 km bike loop over two "Three Crosses" hills, an easy flat 6 km granary trail for families, and the long blue Vistula Trail. Plan 1–3 days. Spring and fall are best.
Two warnings for 2026: the famous Korzeniowy Dół ravine is closed until further notice, and the Kazimierz–Janowiec ferry did not run this season, so crossing the river means a detour via the bridge in Puławy. Stay on paths and never climb ravine walls or roots. Trail signs are mostly in Polish.
Absolutely, especially for walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers and photographers. It is the perfect escape from summer crowds in Kazimierz itself.
