Szklarska Poręba is a mountain town in the Kamienna valley, squeezed between the Karkonosze (Giant Mountains) and the Jizera Mountains in south-western Poland, at 440 to 886 m above sea level. Its name refers to glassmaking: a glassworks is recorded here in the 14th century, and the Józefina works ran from 1842 until 1993. Around 1900 the town, then known by its German name Schreiberhau, was an artists' colony — the writers Carl and Gerhart Hauptmann settled here in 1890. Today it is the gateway to Szrenica, to the waterfalls of Karkonosze National Park and, in winter, to the ski slopes and the Jakuszyce cross-country trails.
This page brings together our picks for a first visit (eight published attractions within the town limits so far), one- and two-day itineraries that add nearby waterfalls and the Snow Cauldrons, transport tips, notes for winter 2026/27 and the full list of sights in the tripto.pl catalogue. Opening hours and prices are on each attraction page; before any mountain walk, read the national park's daily trail bulletin.
Our picks for a first visit — each with a short reason why.
