Things to Do in Karpacz: Śnieżka, the Wang Church and the Karkonosze
Karpacz is a mountain resort in south-western Poland, about 20 km from Jelenia Góra and roughly two hours by car from Wrocław. It sits right below Śnieżka (1,603 m), the highest peak of the Karkonosze (Giant Mountains) and of the whole Sudetes range, and is one of the two main gateways to Karkonosze National Park. A chairlift from the upper town lifts you onto Kopa, trails lead to the glacial lake Mały Staw, and in the upper district stands the Wang Church — a medieval Norwegian stave church that was moved here in the 1840s.

Early morning: up the Kopa chairlift
Go to the lower station on ul. Olimpijska for the first rides — car parks fill up quickly on summer weekends. The lift ticket already includes the national park entry fee.

From Kopa it is about 15 minutes to the Dom Śląski hut, then 30–45 minutes to the top on the steep zigzag path or the gentler Jubilee Road. Bring a windproof jacket even in summer and turn back if fog and wind set in.

Day 1: Śnieżka by chairlift
Kopa and the summit
Take the chairlift, walk via Dom Śląski to the top and either ride down or hike down. In winter the route through the Łomniczka cirque is closed because of avalanche risk.

Hike to Samotnia and Mały Staw
About an hour uphill on the blue trail. The section from Domek Myśliwski to Samotnia closes in winter because of avalanches and from 15 March to 31 May for wildlife protection; a detour is signposted.

Getting there
By air: the nearest large airport is Wrocław; from there Karpacz is about two hours by car, or by train with a change in Jelenia Góra.
By train: since June 2025 Koleje Dolnośląskie runs trains from Jelenia Góra to Karpacz (about 18 minutes). The station is on the edge of town — almost 3 km in a straight line from the Kopa chairlift and a long uphill walk from the Wang Church.
By car: Jelenia Góra is about 20 km away. The chairlift's lower station on ul. Olimpijska has a car park for about 100 cars. Ul. Na Śnieżkę below the Wang Church is closed to general traffic, so park lower down in upper Karpacz.
National park fee: in 2026 a one-day ticket costs 11 zł (reduced 5.50 zł), a two-day ticket 20 zł; children under 7 enter free. Tickets are sold online and at booths by the trailheads.
When to go
Autumn 2026: in October the Kopa chairlift runs Sunday–Thursday 9:00–16:00 and Friday–Saturday 9:00–17:00. It pauses for maintenance on 2–5 November 2026, runs again on 6–15 November and then closes from 16 November until mid-December for inspections.
Winter 2026/27: the opening date of the ski season at Karpacz Ski Arena on Kopa had not been announced as of 9 October 2026 — check with the operator. The Wang Church is open 9:00–17:00 from 1 November to 14 April. In winter the park closes avalanche-prone sections, including the Łomniczka cirque and the trail from Domek Myśliwski to Samotnia; take microspikes and read the park bulletin.
Safety: weather on Śnieżka changes fast, with an average wind speed of about 12 m/s and snow that can lie from October to May. The mountain rescue number in Poland is 985. The park also warns visitors not to cross the barriers around a damaged dam on the Łomnica stream near ul. Olimpijska.
Free days: on 16 January, 24 May and 10 August the park charges no entry fee (except at the Kamieńczyk waterfall).
FAQ
How many days do you need in Karpacz?
One day is enough for the Kopa chairlift, the walk to Śnieżka, the Wang Church and the town centre. A second day lets you hike to the Samotnia hut by Mały Staw or, if the weather is poor, visit the Toy Museum and the sights of nearby Kowary.
What is the easiest way up Śnieżka from Karpacz?
Take the chairlift to Kopa, walk about 15 minutes to the Dom Śląski hut and then 30 to 45 minutes to the summit. From the top station the whole walk usually takes about an hour. Hiking all the way from Karpacz via the Biały Jar trailhead takes around three hours.
Do you have to pay to enter Karkonosze National Park?
Yes. In October 2026 a one-day ticket costs 11 zł, reduced 5.50 zł, and a two-day ticket 20 zł. Children under 7 enter free. If you ride the Kopa chairlift up, the park fee is already included in the lift ticket.
Can you ski in Karpacz in winter 2026/27?
Karpacz Ski Arena operates on Kopa, but the start of the 2026/27 season had not been announced in October 2026. The chairlift is closed for inspections from 16 November to mid-December 2026, so check the operator's website before you book.
What can you do in Karpacz with kids?
The chairlift ride, the Wang Church with its story of a church shipped from Norway and the Toy Museum work well for families. Fit older children can walk from Kopa to the summit of Śnieżka. On a rainy day the miniature park in Kowary is a short drive away.
Can you take a dog up Śnieżka?
Yes, on a lead, except on the red trail through the Łomniczka cirque, where dogs are banned. According to information from October 2026, small and medium-sized dogs ride the Kopa chairlift at no extra charge.
