Park of Miniatures of Lower Silesian Monuments in Kowary

The Lower Silesian Monuments Miniature Park in Kowary (ko-VAH-rih) is an open-air display of 1:25 scale models of the castles, palaces, churches and old towns of southwest Poland. In one stroll you can see Książ Castle, Vang Stave Church, the UNESCO-listed Church of Peace in Jawor and Wrocław's Gothic town hall, plus what the park calls the largest miniature of the Giant Mountains in Poland. Open year-round since 2003, it is an easy family stop when the weather rules out hiking.

Where it is

Kowary is a small town at the foot of the Giant Mountains (Karkonosze) in Lower Silesia, roughly 15–20 km from Jelenia Góra and a few kilometers from the resort of Karpacz. Wrocław, the nearest large city and airport, is about two hours away by car. The park is at ul. Zamkowa 9 and has a free parking lot for about 150 cars and three coaches.

History

The park opened in 2003 on the grounds of a former carpet factory. Its aim is to present the most important monuments of Lower Silesia in one place and to serve as an information point for the Polish–Czech–German border region. The collection is still growing, and you can peek into the on-site workshop where new models are built.

What you will see

The models are made with traditional modeling techniques from weatherproof materials and set among plants, with little scenes of miniature people. Highlights include:

• castles such as Książ, Czocha, Chojnik and Kliczków, plus the medieval Knights' Tower in Siedlęcin;
• palaces of the Jelenia Góra Valley, including Wojanów, Łomnica, Karpniki and the Prussian royal palace in Mysłakowice;
• churches: Vang Stave Church, the Church of Peace in Jawor and the basilica in Krzeszów;
• towns: the old towns of Jelenia Góra and Lubomierz and the town halls of Wrocław and Kowary;
• a large model of the Giant Mountains with Śnieżka, trails and mountain huts;
• sights from across the border, such as the castles of Frýdlant and Vrchlabí and the park in Bad Muskau.

Some buildings are shown as they looked in their heyday, before they fell into ruin.

How to visit

An animator (guide) is included in the ticket and spends about an hour telling the stories and legends behind the models; ask at the ticket desk which languages are available that day. Tickets are valid all day, so you can stay on afterwards, and photography is free. There is a café, a snack bistro and a souvenir shop; in summer an inflatable playground next door gives 10% off with a park ticket.
