Śnieżka

Śnieżka (pronounced roughly "SHNYEZH-kah"; Czech: Sněžka, German: Schneekoppe) is the highest mountain in the Giant Mountains and the whole Sudetes range, rising above the resort town of Karpacz on the Polish–Czech border. Its rocky cone, crowned by a 17th-century chapel and a futuristic weather observatory, is one of the most recognizable sights in southwest Poland. If you are looking for things to do in Karpacz, this is the hike: demanding but non-technical, and achievable for anyone reasonably fit.

Where it is and how to get there

Karpacz lies in Lower Silesia, about 2 hours by car from Wrocław (the nearest major city and airport) and roughly 20 km from Jelenia Góra. Since June 2025 regional trains of Koleje Dolnośląskie run again from Jelenia Góra to Karpacz (about 18 minutes); from Wrocław you change in Jelenia Góra. The chairlift's lower station on Olimpijska Street has its own parking lot for about 100 cars, with more municipal and private lots nearby. Prague is a good alternative gateway if you approach from the Czech side, where a gondola runs from Pec pod Sněžkou almost to the summit.

Why Śnieżka is special

At 1,603.30 m (5,260 ft) Śnieżka is the highest point of the Czech Republic and of Silesia, and the most prominent peak in both Poland and Czechia, with a prominence of 1,184 m. The older figure of 1,602 m still printed in some guidebooks referred to a survey marker, not the actual top. Despite its volcano-like shape, it is not a volcano: it is built of hard hornfels rock that resisted erosion better than the surrounding granite.

The mountain has attracted visitors for centuries. A group of townspeople from Trutnov recorded an ascent in 1577, and in 1800 the future US president John Quincy Adams climbed it and later wrote about the trip. Today Śnieżka sits inside two national parks: Karkonosze National Park on the Polish side and Krkonoše National Park (KRNAP) on the Czech side.

What to see on the summit

• St. Lawrence's Chapel – a round stone chapel begun in 1665 and consecrated on August 10, 1681. A Mass is still held here every year on St. Lawrence's Day.
• The weather observatory – three stacked "flying saucers" built in 1974, the unofficial emblem of the Giant Mountains. The building has been closed to visitors since November 1, 2015 because of its poor condition; a tender for its full renovation was announced in 2026.
• The Czech post office – opened in 2008, it is the highest post office in the Czech Republic, so you can send a postcard from the top.

On a clear day the view stretches for more than 200 km. Be realistic, though: the summit is wrapped in fog on more than 300 days a year.

How to climb Śnieżka from Karpacz

The easy way: the Kopa chairlift. A four-seat chairlift, 2,278 m long, carries you from Karpacz up to Kopa. From the top station a black-marked trail reaches the Dom Śląski mountain hut on the pass below the summit in about 15 minutes. From there two routes lead to the top, each taking 30–45 minutes:

• Zakosy – a steep, rocky zigzag path straight up the cone,
• Droga Jubileuszowa (the Jubilee Road) – a gentler path that circles the cone on the Czech side; a good choice for the descent.

Allow about an hour from the chairlift to the summit, plus time for the views.

On foot all the way: the classic route starts at the Biały Jar bus stop and follows the red trail past the Orlinek ski jump and through the Łomniczka glacial cirque to Dom Śląski – about 3 hours to the top. In winter the cirque section is closed because of avalanche risk, and dogs are banned on it year-round.

Weather and safety

The summit climate is closer to the Arctic than to central Europe. The average annual temperature is only just above freezing, the average wind speed is around 12 m/s (27 mph) and gusts above 80 m/s have been recorded. Even in August, pack a windproof jacket, hat and gloves, check the park's daily trail report, and turn back at Dom Śląski if the weather breaks. In winter, microspikes or crampons are essential.

Tickets and opening hours

As of October 2026:

• Karkonosze National Park entry: 11 PLN standard, 5.50 PLN reduced; children under 7 enter free. Buy at the park entry points or online. The park is open year-round, subject to conditions.
• Kopa chairlift: in October it runs Sunday–Thursday 9 am–4 pm and Friday–Saturday 9 am–5 pm. A standard ticket costs 75 PLN up or 85 PLN round trip on weekdays, and 85 PLN / 95 PLN on weekends; the park fee is included.
• Dogs are allowed on a leash on most trails to the summit, and small or medium dogs ride the chairlift free.
• Payment is in Polish zloty (PLN); cards are widely accepted in Karpacz. Signage on the trails is mainly in Polish and Czech, with trail colors making navigation simple.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes – Śnieżka is the signature summit of the region and the views can be outstanding. For the best experience, go early on a weekday outside the summer holidays, when the trails are quieter and the air is often clearer, especially in autumn. Combine the hike with Karpacz's other sights: the 12th-century Norwegian stave church Wang, the Museum of Sport and Tourism and the historic dam on the Łomnica River.
