Piast Mausoleum in Legnica

In an octagonal chapel beside St John's Church in Legnica, four alabaster figures hold a conversation that never ends. They are the last of the Piasts, the dynasty that founded Poland: fifteen-year-old Duke George William, his parents and his sister. Built in 1677–1679, the Piast Mausoleum is the first Baroque burial chapel in Silesia and a monument to a whole dynasty that ruled here for centuries and died out with the boy in 1675.

History: the end of a dynasty

In March 1675 the young George William paid homage to Emperor Leopold I, who declared him of age and handed him the duchies of Legnica, Brzeg and Wołów. He ruled for just eight months and died on 21 November 1675, the last male Piast. His mother, Duchess Louise of Anhalt, understood the political weight of his death and decided to build a mausoleum that would also glorify the family. With limited funds, she did not commission a separate building: instead the chancel of the Gothic church of St John, the burial place of the Legnica-Brzeg Piasts since the mid-16th century, was converted. Italian builder Carlo Rossi, who had worked on the Piast residence in Oława, designed the domed octagonal chapel. The poet Daniel Casper von Lohenstein helped shape its symbolic programme and wrote the Latin foundation plaque. When the old church was demolished in 1714, only the chancel with the mausoleum survived, and it was incorporated as a chapel into the new Baroque church of 1714–1727.

What to see

• Four life-size alabaster statues by the Viennese sculptor Matthias Rauchmiller. Their plinths carry the family's last dialogue: Louise says "Heu mihi soli" (Woe to me alone), Christian "Nescia gnati" (unaware of our son's fate), George William "At sequor ipse" (I follow myself), and Charlotte asks "Spes ubi nostrae" (Where is our hope?).
• Five metal sarcophagi in niches; those of George William and his parents are silver-plated copper with gilded decoration. On the boy's coffin a broken coat of arms beneath the ducal hat marks the end of the line.
• The dome fresco: Helios halts his chariot before the constellation of Cancer, meaning time stands still.
• Two bands of paintings telling the Piast story, from the legendary Piast and Mieszko I to the death of Henry the Pious at the Battle of Legnica in 1241 and George William's homage in Vienna.

Interesting facts

The family was Calvinist, and Calvinism rejected the veneration of images, so the only religious motif was a statue of the Risen Christ, lost by the end of the 17th century. The duke's sister Charlotte is not buried here: she converted to Catholicism and, as she wished, was laid to rest in Trzebnica at the feet of St Hedwig.

The mausoleum (ul. Ojców Zbigniewa i Michała 1) is managed by the Copper Museum. In 2026 individual visits run Monday to Friday as guided tours at 11:00, 12:30 and 14:00, and the ticket costs PLN 5 with no reductions, sold at the Copper Museum ticket desk next door. Groups can book other times at least a day ahead on +48 76 862 49 49. Tours do not run during Mass. The chapel itself takes about 30 minutes; combine it with the Copper Museum and a walk to the Piast Castle.
