Piast Castle (Legnica)

Piast Castle in Legnica is one of the oldest stone castles in Poland and the former seat of the Piast dukes who ruled this part of Silesia for five centuries. Two Romanesque towers, a Renaissance gateway and the excavated remains of a 13th-century chapel tell its story, and from spring to fall you can climb the towers on a guided tour. Where is Legnica?

Legnica (pronounced roughly "leg-NEE-tsah") is a city in Lower Silesia, southwestern Poland, about 70 km (45 miles) west of Wrocław on the A4 motorway – roughly an hour by car or train. Wrocław airport is the nearest international gateway. Until 1945 the city was German and known as Liegnitz.

A short history

A Piast stronghold stood on the hill above the Kaczawa River by around 985. In the second half of the 12th century Duke Bolesław I the Tall built a masonry castle here; together with Wleń, it is considered the first stone fortress on Polish soil. It burned in 1172 during a revolt led by the duke's son, and was later enlarged by Henry the Bearded, who added a palace, a chapel and the St. Hedwig Tower.

In 1241, during the Mongol invasion that culminated in the Battle of Legnica, the castle held out against a siege. Duke Frederick II remodeled it in 1530–1533; the stone gateway dated 1532, by Georg of Amberg, still shows medallions of the duke and his wife. After the last Legnica Piast died in 1675, the castle passed to the Habsburgs. In February 1945 Red Army soldiers set it on fire. It was rebuilt in the 1960s for schools, and restoration of the towers and roofs has been under way since 2009.

What to see

• St. Peter's Tower – a late-12th-century keep, round at the base and octagonal above, with walls about 4.5 m (15 ft) thick and a viewing terrace on top.
• St. Hedwig's Tower – 13th century, home to the "Green Chamber," a room decorated around 1500 with a fireplace and stone seats.
• Chapel pavilion – foundations of the Romanesque chapel of St. Benedict and St. Lawrence (c. 1220–1240).
• The Renaissance gate facing Castle Square.

Schools still use the residential wings, so the tour covers the towers, courtyard and pavilion only. Signage is mainly in Polish; ask in advance whether an English-speaking guide is available.

Opening hours and tickets

Visits are run by the Copper Museum (Muzeum Miedzi). As of October 2026, its website lists:

• season April 26 – October 31, Wednesday to Sunday, 9:30 am – 5:00 pm,
• guided entries at 9:30, 11:30, 1:30 and 3:30,
• tickets PLN 10 (no concessions), free on Wednesdays, sold in the courtyard,
• reservations by phone: +48 798 654 247,
• November to April: groups of more than 10 only, on weekdays, booked in advance.

Allow about an hour. The towers involve many stairs and are not wheelchair accessible.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you are interested in medieval Poland or are traveling between Wrocław and Dresden – the castle is right on the way, and the tower views are a good introduction to the city. Combine it with the Knights' Academy, the cathedral and the Market Square nearby, or drive about 10 km to Legnickie Pole, the site of the 1241 battle.
