Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Legnica

Legnica Cathedral, the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, is the largest Gothic church in Legnica (pronounced "leg-NEE-tsah"), a historic city in Lower Silesia, southwestern Poland. Its twin green spires dominate the old town skyline, and its interior holds treasures spanning seven centuries, from a bronze baptismal font made before 1300 to a Renaissance sandstone pulpit. Where it is and how to get there

Legnica lies on the A4 motorway about 70 km (45 miles) west of Wrocław, the regional capital with the nearest international airport. Regional trains from Wrocław take roughly an hour. The cathedral stands on Cathedral Square (pl. Katedralny), a short walk from the market square and about 15 minutes on foot from the train station. Before 1945 the city was German and known as Liegnitz.

History in brief

The church is first recorded in 1208, under Duke Henry the Bearded, and a brick building existed by about 1225; it probably burned during the Mongol invasion of 1241, the same campaign that brought the famous Battle of Legnica. The present Gothic church was built between 1333 and 1380, partly under master builder Conrad of Kraków.

In 1524 the church became Lutheran and remained Protestant for more than four centuries. After a fire in 1648 it was rebuilt, and in 1892–1894 Berlin architect Johannes Otzen gave it its neo-Gothic look, adding the south tower. After 1945 the German population was expelled and replaced by Polish settlers; Catholics took over the church in 1947. Pope John Paul II made it a cathedral in 1992 and visited in 1997.

What to see

• The north portal, with an Adoration of the Magi, a rare subject in Gothic portal sculpture, and the west portal of 1338–1341.
• The rose window between the towers, the oldest surviving part of the church.
• A chalice-shaped bronze baptismal font from before 1300, with twelve biblical scenes.
• A Renaissance pulpit of white sandstone (1586–1588) by local sculptor Kasper Berger.
• The baroque high altar (1747–1764) with a painting of the Risen Christ.
• Councillors' stalls from 1568 bearing the city's coat of arms.
• A ducal tomb slab, usually identified as Duke Louis II of Legnica and his wife Elisabeth of Brandenburg.
• An icon of Our Lady of Nadwórna, brought in 1947 by Poles resettled from what is now Ukraine.

Listen for the carillon: the original of 1893 was seized in World War II, and today's 18 Dutch-cast bells were donated by Gerhard Simon, a German former resident of the region.

Visiting tips and opening hours

This is a working cathedral, with no tickets and no fixed sightseeing hours; admission is free. Visit outside Mass times. As of October 2026, Sunday Masses are at 7:30, 10:00 and 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 and 6:30 p.m. Allow 30–45 minutes, dress modestly and keep quiet. Information on site is mostly in Polish.
