Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Legnica

The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Legnica is one of the most important historic buildings in the city centre. Its history reaches back to the early 13th century, while the present structure combines medieval origins with a Neo-Gothic rebuilding carried out in 1892–1894. Since 1992, the church has served as the cathedral of the Diocese of Legnica.

History and rebuilding

In the 14th century, Legnica needed a larger and more representative church, so construction began on a new building. The most important transformation was the rebuilding led by Johannes Otzen: the cathedral gained a brick façade, a new south tower and a redesigned interior. Fires and later works left traces of several stages in the history of Legnica and Silesia.

What to see

Inside, look for the late-Romanesque bronze baptismal font, whose reliefs show scenes from the life of Christ. Notice the brick details, portals, stained glass, altars and epitaphs. The tower has a carillon whose sound returned after restoration in 2002. The cathedral is a strong starting point for exploring Legnica’s historic centre.

Visiting and city route

This is an active church, so quiet sightseeing depends on services and ceremonies. Allow 30–45 minutes for the cathedral, or at least two hours for a route including the market square, Old Town Hall and Piast Castle. Check parish notices before visiting and approach from Cathedral Square.
