Municipal Park in Legnica

Legnica City Park (Park Miejski, pronounced "park MYAY-skee") is the oldest and largest park in this Lower Silesian city: about 58 hectares of greenery right next to the Old Town, stretching along the Kaczawa River and the Młynówka mill stream. It combines a 19th-century landscape layout with a historic palm house, a pond with an island and fountains, a colonnaded garden and an open-air concert shell. It is the obvious place to slow down after sightseeing, and a listed historic monument in its own right.

Where it is and how to get there

Legnica lies on the A4 motorway in southwestern Poland, about 70 km west of Wrocław — roughly an hour by car or train — with Wrocław Airport the nearest international gateway. The park borders the city center: the Market Square is a few minutes' walk away and Legnica train station about 10–15 minutes on foot. Paid on-street parking is available around the park.

A short history

The park's origins go back to meadows the town bought from Duke Bolesław III in 1316. A maze garden appeared in 1810, and over the 19th century the grounds were reshaped as an English-style landscape park, with long tree-lined avenues extended to the Kaczawa. In 1877–1881 the Goat Pond (Kozi Staw) was adapted for gondola rides in summer and skating in winter, and in 1898 a palm house was added to the orangery. A large horticultural exhibition held here in 1926, when Legnica was the German city of Liegnitz, brought dozens of fountains.

After World War II the park passed to the Polish city administration, and entry has been free since 1956. Floods in 1977 and 1997 and a violent storm on July 23, 2009, which felled about 2,500 trees, left their mark, followed by replanting. The park was added to the heritage register in 2010.

What to see

• The Palm House (1898), a glass pavilion with a dome about 13 m high and tropical and subtropical plants.
• Kozi Staw (Goat Pond), about 2 hectares, with an island and fountains; on its bank stands a copy of Christian Daniel Rauch's dying lion sculpture (1872).
• Gaj Muz (Grove of the Muses) with a white pergola reflected in a pond, a relic of a 1910 exhibition and the park's most photogenic corner.
• Fountains and flower beds in the southern part, including a long water channel with fountain jets.
• The concert shell (1975–76), which hosts free summer concerts.

Practical information (as of October 2026)

The park is open to everyone and free. Allow 1–1.5 hours for a loop along the main avenue and around the pond. Paths are paved, so it works well with strollers and bikes. Check palm house opening hours before your visit; third-party listings suggest limited weekday-morning hours, it is closed on Mondays, and the city has been modernizing it. Check with Legnica City Hall (portal.legnica.eu) before making a special trip.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, as part of a visit to Legnica — especially in spring, when the flower beds are planted, or in October, when the old trees turn gold. Next to the pond stands the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul, and the Piast Castle and St. Mary's Church with its viewing tower are a short walk away.
